SNMP::Info releases version 2.00

Mon, 04 Aug 2008 03:27:32 GMT (jeneric)
SNMP::Info is a Perl 5 Module used in the back-end of Netdisco and other projects to abstract device and vendor-specific information to a common, usable Object-oriented API.

This is first official release in about two years and has been designated as a major release. The module supports even more vendors, improves coverage on existing vendors / devices, contains multiple internal enhancements for developers, and includes numerous bug fixes.

There is additional support for Cisco, Foundry, HP, and Nortel, while adding support for popular Alcatel-Lucent, Cyclades, Dell, D-Link, Enterasys, Linksys, Microsoft, and Sun devices. Support for Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), wireless service set identifier (SSID), wireless channel assignment, additional VLAN information, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) from devices which support these protocols.

Developers should note enhancements targeting SNMPv3, the new set_multi() method to enable a SNMP set command on several new values in one request, the ability to fully qualify a MIB Leaf to resolve name conflicts, generic device type detection using an IANA assigned enterprise number, dynamic methods using MIB Leaf node names for loaded MIB's without re-definition in %FUNCS or %GLOBALS, partial table fetches in overridden table methods, single instance partial table fetches, and an agent loop detect option. The API remains compatible with previous versions.

Please see the Changelog for full details.

Overview

Netdisco is an Open Source web-based network management tool first released publically in 2003. The target users are large corporate and university networks administrators. Data is collected into a Postgres database using SNMP and presented with a clean web interface using Mason.

Configuration information and connection data for network devices are retrieved via SNMP. Data is stored using a SQL database for scalability and speed. Layer-2 topology protocols such as CDP and LLDP provide automatic discovery of the network topology. Here are some of the favorite uses for this tool:

Netdisco gets all its data, including topology information, with SNMP polls and DNS queries. It does not use CLI access and has no need for privilege passwords.

Support

Support is provided on the Netdisco Users Mailing List. (search)

Supported Devices

Most any device that speaks SNMP well is supported to some extent. To the full extent Cisco and HP are supported best, followed by a lot of vendors.

See the [Device Matrix] for more details.

Development

Netdisco was originally developed by Max Baker as a project of UC Santa Cruz's NTS department.
The project is now supported by a community of open-source developers, headed by Eric Miller, Bill Fenner, Oliver Gorwits, and Max Baker.
